Round #11 Report  - Daniel Nsibambi (Uganda)

Hi All,

Ugandans are getting hotter  as the weather becomes colder here in Bled. With temperatures touching 0  degrees centigrade at night, Uganda  found no problem to overcome Malta 2.5 - 1.5 in another close contest.

It took  one win by  Steven Kawuma and three draws by Shadrack Kantinti, Isaac Munanira and Ignatius Wanderema to topple well-drilled Malta.

Kawuma (2053) on table  found litle resistance in recording the fastest win of the evening against Duncan Vella (2200). It took him less than thirty minutes to finish the job in a game that may take two hours. Duncan questionably sacrificed a rook and later realised that he could not penetrate  Kawuma's solid defences. He resigned soon afterwards giving Uganda its win of the evening.

Shadrack Kantinti (2200) on table 1 played white pieces against Colin Pace (2171). Although Kantinti appeared to have an edge in the end game, they both decided to settle for a draw.

Isaac Munanira ( unrated) again proved  a pain  in the neck for considerably higher rated Joseph Grech (2202). Playing table 3 with black pieces, Isaac pinned Joseph down for the longer part of the game   gaining  an extra pawn in the process. Isaac's position in the end game could have won the game but for a slight error which gave a draw to the much relieved Joseph.

Ignatius Wanderema (unrated) on table 4 with white pieces overcame a lost position with a knight down to earn a draw from 18 -year old Daniel Abela (unrated). Daniel  who had appeared sure of victory took time to believe that Ignatius had snatched a lucky draw.

Uganda (115) now in position 101 has 19.5 points and will face Barbados (seeded 99) in round 11 at 2.30 pm local time here, two hours behind Ugandan time. The  team will be: Grace Nsubuga, Shadrack Kantinti, Steven Kawuma and Isaac Munanira.
