Round #6 Preliminary Report - Daniel Nsibambi (Uganda)
Hi All,
The team acknowledges with thanks the words of encouragement received from you.
It is going to be a make or die day for Uganda when they meet mighty Zambia this afternoon. The Ugandan's celebratory mood after yesterday is marked by caution knowing that their higher rated opponents may present an uphill task.
Zambia will be led by their 20 year-old international master Amon Simutowe (2383) who will face Uganda's Nsubuga (2224) on board 1. Nsubuga will play white pieces which are considered to provide an initial advantage. The two are familiar with each other having met in New York last year on a special invitational tournament. Amon is also well-known by Ugandan chess enthusiasts, having won the African ChessYouth championship held in Kampala in 1999 when he was only 17.
Kantinti (2200) on table 2 faces Stanley Chumfwa (2252) while Stephen Kawuma (2053) will face Nase Lungu ( 2282) a fide master on table 3. Isaac Munanira (unrated) will be up against Tizenge Mbambara (2097) on table 4. Kawuma, Munanira and Tizenge competed in the 1999 Kampala African Chess Championships.
The Zambians have enjoyed a fine run this Olympiad, turning out good results against much stronger opponents. The Ugandans hope to surprise them this afternoon inspite of their reputation.
Regards
Daniel
