Round #8 Report - Daniel Nsibambi (Uganda)
Hi All,
It has been another happy day for Uganda here in Bled after our boys wrestled Thailand and put them down for 2.5 points against 1.5.
The victory could have been bigger if Grace Nsubuga (2224) playing black pieces against highly rated Saeheng Boonsueb (2306) had seen the correct move.
Grace missed a golden opportunity for a win when he moved the wrong direction after pushing his pawns on the seventh, sixth and fifth ranks one move away from queening. His opponent, sensing the danger, bamboozled him with perpetual knight checks which threw Grace off balance. He ended up offering a draw which was gladly accepted by his grateful opponent.
In other games, Steven Kawuma (2053) on table 2 was his usual cool self finishing off higher rated Theerapabpaisit Wisuwat (2188) after a long struggle. It was a game of resilience and innovation on behalf of Steven.
Ignatius Wanderema ( unrated) on table 3 had contained Jiravorasuk Banjuab ( 2255) but Banjuab used his superior rating and an extra pawn to good effect to win in the dying minutes.
The most colourful game of the evening must go to Isaac Munanira (unrated) who is really on a song in Bled. He put higher rated Usomsri Thongchai (2048) against the ropes forcing him to resign with a combination of tactics. Isaac has played 6 games in this Olympaid, usually against stronger players, and won 4. Not too bad for a debutant.
Uganda now has 14 points garnered from 8 rounds. Tomorrow is rest day. Games resume Monday 4 November 2002.
Other selected results: Botswana 1.5 - United Arab Emirates 2.5; Yemen 3.5 - Libya 0.5; Kenya 2.5 - Sumatra 1.5; Angola 3 - Turkey 1; Zimbabwe 1 - Bolivia 3, South Africa 2 - Monaco 2; Egypt 1 - Slovenia B 3; Qatar 1.5 - Nigeria 2.5; Namibia 2 - Malta 2; Mongolia 2.5 - Zambia 1.5; Ethiopia 2 - Nicaragua 2; Tunisia 2 - Dominican Republic 2; Russia 2.5 - Netherlands 1.5 (without Kasparov); Ireland 1 -Brazil 3; England 3 - Spain 1.
Rwanda's opponents Guernsey disappeared from the venue without explanation so lucky Rwanda earned four free points without a sweat.
Our next opponent with the same or nearly the same number of points , will be known later in the evening after all the results have been compiled.
Cheers
Daniel
