2008 African Junior Championship

Here is a letter from Lynne van Rensburg of South Africa to federations in the African Chess Union. CHESSA, or Chess Federation of South Africa is hosting the event.

    The African Junior Chess Championships will be taking place from 28th December to 6th January in South Africa. We have invited all the African countries via email and have the entry posted on the FIDE website under Tournaments in Africa. More Information about the event can be found at

    Entries are limited to 4 per country per section (1 invited and 3 additional).

    Final registration deadline is 15 November 2008.

    Additional Information:

    The African Junior Champion shall be awarded the title of International Master. Clear first place is equivalent to a 9-rd Grandmaster result. The winner of the African Junior Championship will have the right to participate in the next year’s World Junior Championship if he/she has not exceeded the age limit in the meantime.

    Entitled to participate are chess players from the federations in Zone 4.1 to 4.3 who shall not have reached the age of 20 by January 1st of 2008. Fifty percent deposti payment of the registration fee of €100 for ALL players is payable by 15th November 2008, with the balance to be paid by 30th November 2008 into the CHESSA bank account:

    One boy and one girl per Federation, plus the previous year’s champion are invited with FREE accommodation. For additional players, 50% deposit payment of the accommodation cost of €45 per day for 9 days is payable by 15th November 2008, with the balance to be paid by 30th November 2008 into the CHESSA bank account. (1 boy and 1 girl per federation will have free accommodation).

    For accompanying persons, 50% deposit payment of the accommodation cost of €50 per day for 9 days is payable by 15th November 2008, with the balance to be paid by 30th November 2008 into the CHESSA bank account. For all payments, please use the reference of AJ, your Federation code, Surname, (for example AJRSAvanRensburg meaning African Juniors, South Africa, player name) and email lynne@chessa.co.za with the proof of payment.
    The travelling expenses of the participants are to be paid by their National Federations.

    There will be a separate section for the Ladies and Men.
