The first in a 2013 series of FIDE Grand Prix events kicks off on April 17th in Zug, Switzerland with several of the top brass competing. The last cycle culminated in the Candidate’s Tournament ending with GM Magnus Carlsen earning the right to challenge World Champion Viswanathan Anand. That match will take place (tentatively) in Chennai, India in November.

The tournament’s field features six of the top ten players led by Teimour Radjabov who had a poor showing in the Candidate’s tournament, but looks to start afresh in a tough field. Sergey Karjakin of Russia and Fabiano Caruana are aspirants as well as America’s Hikaru Nakamura. There are a couple of familiar faces such as former World Champion Veselin Topalov and FIDE World Champions Ruslan Ponomariov and Rustam Kasimdzhanov.

  1. hmmm…some observers are suggesting that Radjabov go play some tournaments that are just a tier down or so, so he can get back to his winning ways.
