2011 Jamaican National Championship
The Jamaican National Championships will begin on tomorrow, Saturday July 16th through July 31st. The game will take place on Saturdays and Sundays at the Norman Manley Law School, UWI Mona campus at 6pm. On July 22nd and 29th, the games will be held at the Spanish Court Hotel. Many of the top Jamaican players are noticably absent.

The Women’s Championship is a is a Double Round Robin with Time Control – 40 moves in 90 minutes, 30 minutes to complete, 30 second increment.

DAVY, RICHARDS START AS FAVOURITES FOR NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Damion Davy will be the top seed in the 2011 Nationals.
National Master (NM) Damion Davy will start as favourites when the 2011 National Chess Championships get underway today Friday, 15 July at 6 pm at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
The Championship will see the top 12 active chess players in the country battle for national chess supremacy. When round one gets underway today NM Peter Myers will challenge Peter Thomas, Mark Henry will be up against Michael Diedrick, Paul Brooks will tackle Markland Douglas, FCM Mark Holness will battle NM Andrew Mellace, Ian Wilkinson will take on Miguel Asher and Shreyas Smith will be up against NM Damion Davy. Players named first will start with the white pieces.
In the Women’s Championship which runs concurrently and at the same venue, Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Deborah Richards will start as overwhelming favourite, as she seeks to secure her tenth straight hold on the National Women’s Champion title. WFM Richards’ main challenge is expected to come from Melisha Smith.
The start of the Women’s event will see the following matches: Zhu Hui vs Ariel Barrett and Krishna Gray vs Melisha Smith. WFM Deborah Richards has a bye for Round 1.
Rounds two and three of both events are scheduled to take place at 1 pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Norman Manley Law School at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
