Zimbabwe’s 2014 Olympiad Team
Zimbabwe has named its team to compete in the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. The team consists of veterans and newcomers alike. IM Robert Gwaze will lead the tables for Zimbabwe as he will play in his 5th Olympiad. It was in the 2002 edition that Gwaze earned a gold medal with a 9/9 score. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe missed the next four Olympiad tournaments until they traveled to Istanbul, Turkey.
IM Farai Mandizha was the leading scorer in Istanbul with 8/11, but he will hold 3rd board behind IM Rodwell Makota. Back in 2011, Makota won the Zimbabwean Championship with 9/9. He also won the 2012 South African Open ahead of GM Ahmed Adly.
Candidate Master Dion Moyo suits up in his second Olympiad after scoring 3.5/8 in Istanbul. Spencer Masango also capped in Istanbul while this will be Emarald Mashore’s maiden Olympiad.
