GM Zhu Chen on African tour!
GM Zhu Chen
The African Chess Confederation through the support of the World Chess Federation Women’s Commission has the honour of hosting the former World Woman Chess Champion Grand Master Zhu Chen from China.
Grandmaster Zhu Chen is the former World Woman Chess Champion, she has reached the highest level of play by attaining a Grand Master title joining some of the strongest Grand Masters in the World in the likes of Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov. She is a role model to a lot of young girls in chess.
The African Chess Confederation has seen it fit to partner with the World Chess Federation Women’s Commission and continue with the initiative of promoting women chess by bringing role models closer to younger chess players and aspiring chess players. The World Chess Federation Women’s Commission brought Woman Grand Master Anastasia Karlovych from Ukraine to Botswana in 2014 as part of the promotional tour. The 2015 tour targeted Seychelles, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia.
The purpose of GM Zhu Chen’s visit is as follows:
- Inspire/motivate young girls in Africa, with main focus on their attraction and retention in sports.
- Engage in a simultaneous chess display with a selected number of young chess players from the selected African countries
- Engage in mini training sessions with a selected number of young chess players from the selected African Countries
- Promote Africa as a tourist attraction with focus on sport for development
In the second quarter of 2016 the second episode of GM Zhu Chen’s assignment will be a visit to west and east Africa.
