Kenya’s Sagwe walks 165kms to promote chess
Sustainable Development Goals or “SDGs“are 17 targets for creating a more economically, ecologically and environmentally-friendly planet. The United Nations has embarked on a long-term approach to tackle a number of problems in “health and education, reduced inequality and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserves our oceans and forests.” Fred Sagwe is seen carrying a chess banner during his journey.
In a short video clip, Sagwe briefly discusses his personal initiative to support SDGs by embarking on a six-day walk from Nairobi to Nakuru (165 kilometers or 102 miles) to advocate the adoption of chess as an educational tool. Back in 2015, Sagwe posted this comment at The Chess Drum.
We need the Pan African support to achieve the same feat in Kenya by the year 2016 when we shall have school curriculum review. (link)
Since 2015, Kenya has had a number of outreach initiatives promote chess which you can find here and here.
The current Head of Chess-in-Schools (Kenya), Sagwe has also been helping to provide energy to rural areas. Check out his other initiatives in rural Kenya communication technology through the use of solar power. He wrote about this subject in a posting titled, “This Solar-Powered Device can Deliver Clean Water, Electricity and Internet to Africa.”
