Howard University Chess preparing for 2025 Pan-Ams
Howard University Chess Club is preparing for the 2025 Pan-Am Intercollegiate tournament to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, January 2-5, 2025. The club’s President, Lawrence Custis, has announced the club’s participation and is holding a fundraiser to cover expenses.
The Howard Chess Club has participated in the Pan-Ams on several occasions, including the last four. The Bison have also participated in the first two HBCU Chess Classic tournaments (2023 2024), dominating affairs in the first event and winning 2nd earlier this year. Howard held their Pan-Am qualifiers on November 20th and plans to field 10 players.

Custis told The Chess Drum, “These experiences have been instrumental in growing our team’s skills and reputation, and we’re eager to build on that momentum.” Howard is building on the momentum after rejuvenating the club after a 20-year hiatus. They are setting the example for other HBCUs to follow, and hopefully, we will see more growth on these historic campuses. Other schools have mobilized and will also be sharpening their swords for the 3rd HBCU Chess Classic, but Howard will be battle-tested!
The Howard Unversity Chess Club will also celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026.
