This year's Easter Open in Jamaica was played on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston. Veteran player Humphrey Gayle captured the event (on tiebreaks) edging Jamaica's #1 player NM Shane Matthews. Although both players scored 4-1, Gayle emerged as the winner on tiebreaks having lost only one match (ironically to Matthews), while Matthews was nicked for 2 draws. In 3rd place was FM Grantel Gibbs with 3½-1½; tied for 4th was NM Mark Holness and Peter Myers who scored 3-2. Markland Douglas had what will certainly be a highlight of his chess career when held off a determined and able Shane Matthews in the last round. The draw clinched the Amateur prize for Douglas while preventing Matthews from winning clear first. Visiting English player, Miles Shaw closed out the scoreboard with 2-3.
