To Dr. Daaim Shabazz:
Dear Sir,
I would like to clarify a few points concerning the "slavery" article which appeared in my chess column in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper in England :
I never have and never will seriously advocate slavery. The reason that, to the best of my knowledge, my newspaper has yet to receive a single complaint on the issue, is that most people had not the slightest difficulty in discerning that my article was completely tongue in cheek. If it were serious, I would expect to, and thoroughly deserve to, lose my job immediately.
I apologise if I offended anyone at your website. That certainly was what not my intention. An ironical style is very much my trademark, as you will see if you read some of my other columns.
I wish your readers all the best! I might add that I have now included "The Chess Drum" among my favourites.
Yours sincerely,
Nigel Short.
