Seven-time National Champion Shane Matthews will only be able to enjoy his crown for one more before he gets set to defend it in the 36th edition of the Jamaican National Championship. Matthews won his last crown less than six months ago, but because this is an Olympiad year, many chess nations are having to determine their teams earlier than usual.
The top six finishers will compete for the Olympiad team and as usual, there will be strong competition from a contingent of National Masters. Other hopefuls will include young stars such as newly-minted National Master Ras Malaku Lorne, Daren Wisdom and the 2003 Women's Champion, Deborah Richards. It is not yet clear whether she will play on the men's team if she secures one of the six slots. More details at link below.
