The launch of the 2005 National Chess Championship, sponsored by LASCO FOODS LIMITED, takes place this Saturday at 2 pm at the Norman Manley Law School (NMLS), University of the West Indies, Mona. Round one action will begin on Sunday at the same venue at approximately 1 p.m.
Twelve of Jamaica's top chess players will take to the boards, seeking Jamaica's most coveted chess title. The field is headed by defending champion and Jamaica's #1 ranked player, FIDE Master Warren Elliot, who starts as pre-tournament favourite.
Elliot's main challenges are expected to come from past champions, National Masters Shane Matthews, Russel Porter, Duane Rowe and Jomo Pitterson. The field is completed by National Masters Ras Malaku Lorne, Robert Wheeler, Geoffrey Byfield and Mark Holness and Candidate Masters Equitable Brown, Peter Myers and National Women's Champion Deborah Richards.
Round one on Sunday will see Byfield vs. Matthews, Pitterson vs. Wheeler, Lorne vs. Porter, Holness vs. Richards, Elliot vs. Rowe and Brown vs. Myers. The tournament is scheduled to take place over 11 rounds, using the round robin pairing system.
