Well Wishes to FM Emory
Tate!
Name = Kimani
Stancil
Place_of_Residence = USA (Berkeley, CA)
Email = KimaniS@aol.comMessage = The best
chess player that the world has not really acknowledged is Mr. Emory A.
Tate. This is partly due more to a focus on his results rather than on his
ideas. For me, Emory has made conceptualization in chess interesting and
fun. As far as I know, Mr. Tate is self-taught. As a young player,
my self-study was mainly a conceptual exercise since I was fortunate to have
strong gifts for calculation.
The conceptual surprises found in Emory's
games were always fascinating and helped to deepen my love for chess. I
can still remember some aspects of a shocker of a game played by Emory (white
pieces) vs. Virginian Timothy Hamilton (black pieces) when I was just starting
my chess play in Maryland. Though I have not been able to find this game
or locate the Maryland Chess news letter that this first appeared in, I do
remember how quickly the game opened up with a rook sac on f7 with the king in
the middle, and then a king-hunt ensued which was indefatigably conducted by two
bishops and a queen. The beauty of checkmate is pervasive in his
games.
I am sure that all of the top players of the
world have exhaustively studied Tate-Yudasin
1997 {Chicago U.S. Masters}, a spectacular masterpiece where fluidly, each
of Emory's pieces were relevant in sustaining a powerful mating attack.
Emory's chess vision is explosive, and I feel privileged to have seen his
fireworks both in his games and in listening to his colorful oratory. I am
extremely happy about his tournament achievements and now his chance to win the
U.S. Championship. Best wishes Emory, and may you eventually achieve the
Grandmaster Title that would officially describe the Grandmaster that you
are!

was very happy to learn that Emory had qualified for the 2006 U.S. Championship.
I remember Emory from days in Chicago when our Sicilian Najdorfs would be a
bench-clearing brawls with five or six pieces hanging. I was a teenager then and
his style has left an indelible impression on me.
Everyone has a favorite story about Tate
and/or his games. I would be so bold to say that 500 years from now, people
in chess will still utter his name... stories about the legendary "chess
assassin" with his tactical swords. His games show wit, depth, originality,
courage and yes... brutality. Me and Marvin Dandridge, also
of Chicago, would jokingly call him "Emory Mate."
One of my
favorite stories about Tate was watching his coliseum-like analysis session at
the 2001 World Open... 30-40 people watching... standing on chairs... peering
through the crowd... trying to get a glimpse of his demolition of GM Sergey
Kudrin. After this lively and animated session, Tate makes a closing comment and
as he is leaving the room, a thunderous applause erupts! It was really
a proud moment!

game.) I'm the main tournament director in St. Louis, MO and rated around

With all due respect to Greg (I've met and played blitz with him), There is no

This past year I had the unique opportunity to entertain Mr. Tate in my home on
several occasions. He is a true genius and that is not limited to his virtuosity
on the chess board. Master Tate was here (Columbia, SC) to compete in the
Columbia Masters for five consecutive weekends. Yes, he placed first in all of
them. I played three rated games against him, losing two and drawing one. The
following moves are from the game where we made peace. White: Hill Black:
Tate Game 30: 1.d4 Nf6 2.e3 c5 3. Bd3 b6 4. Nf3 g6 5. Nbd2 Bg7 6.

remaining on his clock Master Tate offered a draw which I quickly
accepted!

Congratulations Mr. Tate,
Get that
title!
I had the pleasure to meet you a few years
ago here in Atlanta. You graciously visited and played at the home of some
acquaintances of mine. There we five were: Soloman, Aaron, Sulaiman,
myself and you. You graciously played ma a game...one I will never
forget.
I still play chess recreationally and am
still warmed by brilliance of the chess stars. Keep it
up.
Sincerely,
Linda Bell

It was a pleasure to follow your games during the U.S.
Closed championships. Keep up the struggle and be prepared for another fierce
battle next year.
As one of the few american born players in the tournaments,
I hope that a lot of people were pulling for your success.
Peace be with
you,

Emory Tate,
Congratulations on your achievement!
I'm LCDR Vic Smith
corrently in deployed to Africa. My friend, Mr. Keith Eubanks always
stated that your game was off the chain. Last week I was able to go over
some of your games, and I must say your style of play is right next to Bobby
Fisher and M. Tal. I was greatly impressed! In the next future, your time
permiting, I'll like to become your disciple. Please let me know cost and how
this could be achieved. Plus I trully believe you are the best Armed forces
champion ever.
Thank you. Vic
