Excitement rolls onto the island of Jamaica as the inaugural chess league began on March 25th. Seven teams have begun battling for the heralded crown and the teams will continue on until June 18th. The league is sponsored by LASCO, a pharmaceutical and food company which has sponsored many tournaments including the national championships.
Each team fields six players (average rating under 2150) and are identified by such colorful names as "Knightmares," "Blitzkrieg Boys" and many others. It appears as if the spirit of competition is to the liking of President Ian Wilkinson who is also participating as a player on the "King Rippers." This competition will provide an opportunity for players to develop more cohesion within the chess community as practically every Jamaica player of note is participating.
Stay tuned for round-by-round coverage!
