GM Maurice Ashley was invited to Greensboro, North Carolina at the behest of Joseph Graves, Jr., a geneticist researcher, Associate Professor and Dean of University Studies at North Carolina A&T. NC A&T is one of the preeminent historically-Black universities in the nation.
Ashley, the first African-American Grandmaster was certainly introduced to "Aggie Pride" as he gave the community a three-day presentation on chess and its importance to the Black community. He also told personal stories, discussed his book, "Chess for Success" and gave a simultaneous exhibition.
