IM Michael Schleifer has been a top player in Canada many years having participated in several Canadian Championships. Those in the US may know Schleifer from his performance at the historic Wilbert Paige Memorial Chess Tournament. He has been relatively quiet for the past couple of years, but is currently battling in the Canadian Closed and Zonal Chess Championships being held in Toronto, Canada.
In the 7th round, Schleifer finished a nice mating attack against Hugues Massé putting him on at an outside shot for a top spot. He lost his last-round encounter and closed out on 5½-3½. Residing in the Quebec province, it is hopeful that the Canadian IM will resume his activity on the tournament trail.
