Ronnie Nelson, Jr. shows his trophies won in 2004 and 2005 at the Junior Orange Bowl international scholastic Chess Tournament.
Lesley-ann Nelson believes that there is a Caribbean Tiger on the loose. Of course readers of The Chess Drum will know that she speaks of her nephew, Ronnie "RJ" Nelson. RJ recently won the under-10 championship among 25 players becoming the youngest player to do so. J. Smith took 2nd place while, M. Wong and Akeenie Murray were joint 3rd from a total of 25 participants.
The week prior to the under-10 championship, RJ was able to meet GM Nigel Short who was on a Caribbean tour. Lesley-Ann Nelson stated that Short shared stories about his chess evolution and expressed the importance of analyzing with the opponent. RJ appears to have gained a bit of momentum since his participation in the HB Global Chess Challengelast May. RJ has a tentative tournament international schedule and will receive support from the Kids Chess program with support by the Save Our Children Foundation.
